About the project
University Hospital Basel is rebuilding its campus in the middle of the city — with the hospital fully in operation throughout. Klinikum 2, dating from the 1970s, is being replaced by the «Arcadia» new build by Zurich architects giuliani.hönger: phase one, from 2024 to 2030, adds a new tower behind the existing building with 342 general-care beds, more than 60 examination and treatment rooms, and an emergency centre serving as the polytrauma centre for north-west Switzerland. The old Klinikum 2 is then demolished and rebuilt through 2038, with the campus complete by 2042. Helipad, emergency department and logistics keep running the whole time.
